Aim of this credit

To recognise and encourage the specification and procurement of responsibly sourced products. 

Assessment criteria

The following is required to demonstrate compliance:
Prerequisite:
  1. All timber and timber-based products used on the project are Legally harvested and trader timber.
Sustainable procurement plan (1 credit)
  1. By the end of concept design stage, the client or developer has a documented policy and procedure that sets out procurement requirements for all suppliers and trades to adhere to relating to the responsible sourcing of construction products (see
  2. The documented policy and procedure must be disseminated to all relevant internal and external personnel, and included within the construction contract to ensure that they are enforceable on the assessed project.
  3. The documented policy and procedure must encourage the specification of products with responsible sourcing certification over similar products without certification.
Responsible sourcing of construction products (Up to 3 credits)
The available responsible sourcing credits (refer to Table 42 of the BREEAM NC 2016 manual) can be awarded where the applicable construction products (refer to Table 43 of the BREEAM NC 2016 manual are responsibly sourced in accordance with the BREEAM methodology, as defined in the Methodology section.

How to achieve the Mat 03 credit

You can add the Mat 03 sourcing tool to any existing LCA, as the materials will be automatically displayed in the building materials query of the sustainable sourcing tool as well. Once everything is filled in you can navigate to the results page to view your results. 

In the example below, required fields to fill in are:
  1. The manufacturer of the product
  2. The Mat 03 sourcing option*
  3. The Mat 01 group
*Note: EPDs generally do not mention these, you will often find this on the manufacturers website.
