How to mark a task

How to mark a task

Once a task has been submitted by a student you will need to mark them if you have not enabled self or peer marking. Most questions can also be marked by AI, but not all.

Navigating to a task

To mark a task, log into your teacher account and navigate to:
  1. The course you set the task for
  2. The class
  3. The Task

You will see the Mark button will have a bell icon next to it, indicating you need to mark or commit a task.

The marking interface

  1. This is your actions tab.  You can view:
    1. A list of your students.
    2. The question.
    3. The answer.
    4. Your feedback.
    5. References.
  2. Student selection - This is the current student you are marking.
    1. You can also see this at number 5
  3. Marking - This shows you how many questions are ready to be marked.
    1. If there is a "-" and the student's name is greyed out, this means they have not completed their task yet.
  4. Status - You are able to see the status of a task.
    1. Task is awaiting marking.
    2. Student has started the task.
  5. Now viewing - this will show what student you are currently marking.  This stays with you on every marking screen, so you can always see who you're marking.
  6. Students (unmarked) - This will allow you to cycle through your unmarked students, rather than having to go back a page.
  7. This is useful if you want to mark the same question for all your students.
  8. Questions (unmarked) - This will allow you to cycle through unmarked questions for the selected student, rather than going back a page.
  9. Submit - This commits scores to the mark book.

Question tab

In this tab you can see the question the student has answered.
You can move to the next question by selecting the arrow buttons next to Questions (Unmarked) button.
You can also see the student you are marking at the bottom of the page.

Answer tab

In this tab you can see the answer the student gave, together with the mark scheme.
Select the check boxes to indicate to the student how the marks were awarded. This is optional. You can also enter a mark in the total marks box.

If you want to stay on the answer screen and mark a different student, you can click the arrows next to "Students (unmarked)" at the top of the page to change student.

Feedback tab

In this tab you can leave feedback for the student.
Students will be able to see your feedback when they look at their task in their mark book.
Select the check box to link the comment to the current question or leave this unchecked to make a general comment for the whole task. Don't forget to save the comment.

If you want to stay on the feedback screen and input feedback for a different student, you can click the arrows next to "Students (unmarked)" at the top of the page to change student.

References tab

In this tab you can see related text book page numbers and video references for the question.
Each type of reference can be toggled on or off in the class settings. We advise only selecting references students will have access to.
Many longer answer questions also have a model answer video. The students can access these from the task in their mark book.

Remember to click submit when you have finished marking, to commit the marks to the mark book.

How we suggest you mark a task

The quickest way to mark a task is to mark the same question for all students before moving on to the next question. This reduces the need to remember the question and mark scheme and significantly reduces the time to mark a task for the whole task. Note all Quiz questions are marked automatically.

1. Click/tap Unmarked underneath the label Students (in the middle of the left and right icons). This navigates to the next student that has an unmarked question.
2. Click/tap the Question tab to read the question.
3. Click/tap the Answer tab to read the answer the student gave.
4. Optionally select the check boxes in the mark scheme to show the student how the mark scheme is applied to their answer.
5. If the answer was marked by AI, review the feedback and marks awarded. Use the down vote icon if you disagree with the marking to send feedback to Smart Revise.
6. Check the total marks at the bottom of the screen and change as necessary.
7. If you want to leave feedback to the student for the question or task, click/tap the Feedback tab and write your comments. Remember to save.
8. Click/tap the up arrow next to  the Submit button and select Submit & next unmarked student (you only need to do this the first time - Smart Revise will remember this setting).
9. Click/tap the Submit & next student button to go to the next student for the same question.
10. Repeat steps 3-9 until the question has been marked for all students. You will see a green pop-up toaster at the top of the screen when this happens.
11. Click/tap Unmarked underneath the label Questions (in the middle of the left and right icons). This navigates to the next question that has an answer than needs marking.
12. Repeat steps 2-11 until all the marking is complete.

You can use the left/right navigation buttons to cycle through students or questions. You can also return to the Students tab at any time to see the marking status for the whole class and select individual students.

Reasearch by John Hattie has shown that self and peer assessment can increase student attainment by a whole grade, so our advice is not to mark every task, but use these options instead.
